This is part one of a two part series on gym etiquette do’s and don’ts’s. This month we will be covering six gym etiquette do’s and in next month’s newsletter we will be sharing six gym etiquette don’ts. Aside from the well-known common courtesies (like wearing deodorant and being a kind human) there are some gym-specific courtesies that may not be as well-known. Here are six gym etiquette do’s to help make the gym a safe and uplifting place for everyone.
DO Show Up On Time
The same way you’d show up on time to anything else important, do your best to show up on time to class. Being there for the workout explanation and warmup is just as important as the workout. Don’t keep your fellow class mates and the coach waiting on you. Yes, there are things out of our control that happen sometimes and make us late. But if you consistently show up late to classes, maybe it’s time to put more importance on showing up on time.
DO Listen to the Coach
The coach is there for a reason. They are there to lead, teach, correct, and encourage. Don’t ignore what the coach tells you. Everything the coach tells you is to help make you better and keep you safe.
DO Leave your Ego at the Door
CrossFit is a very humbling experience. It’s a place where we all show up to improve ourselves and work on our weaknesses. Sometimes you may not be able to go as heavy as you’d like on a lift or maybe the rx isn’t going to give you the intended stimulus. Lay your pride down. Make each individual rep count. Move with integrity. Show up with a smile willing to learn and be part of something bigger than your score. At the end of the day, it’s you verses you. Don’t cheat yourself from becoming the best version of yourself.
DO Bring a Water Bottle
We all know hydration is important, yet many of us still walk around chronically dehydrated. An important part of staying hydrated is having water easily accessible to you at all time! Especially when you’re at the gym. Having enough water to drink before and after your workout will contribute to better energy, performance, and recovery.
DO Encourage Others
Have you ever been the last one in a workout? It can be a daunting feeling when everyone is done and you still have more to go. Make sure to always encourage others around you. Be happy when someone else succeeds. The gym should be an uplifting place, where we all struggle and triumph together. After all, it’s the relationships we form and our community that make CrossFit special.
DO Sign Up for Class
Signing up for class is important because most people don’t want to work alone. If there are others already signed up for class, it encourages others to sign up as well rather than skip because no one else is signed up.
