“If only they had received the help they needed…”

In just the past year, 9 First Responders in the Puget Sound Region alone have lost their lives to suicide.  All too often, First Responders do not reach out to the resources offered by their Departments due to outdated stigmas and fears they perceive could affect or end their careers.  In 2013, after witnessing too many lives, careers, and families lost during times of personal crisis, a Seattle Police Officer founded Code 4 Northwest. With no affiliations to any department Code 4 NW can truly offer confidential support and services to all current and former Police, Fire, EMS, Nurses, Corrections, civilian support staff, and their families.  Statistics show that the earlier a person in crisis is reached… the better the outcome.  Code 4 Northwest is an all volunteer nonprofit with no overhead costs.  Every dollar given goes directly to helping others.

Since inception, Code 4 has assisted over 1,000 first responders and family members.

Code 4 Northwest operates a 24-hour crisis line manned by volunteer who are current and former First Responders who are available for crisis assistance, counseling referrals – Peer Support Services – Legal Services – PTSD treatment referrals and with a network of Substance Abuse and Mental Health facilities.  Code 4 NW also assists individuals and families financially through a fund called the “Bailey Sharp Scholarship Fund.”  The fund was started in honor of Bailey Sharp, the daughter of a first responder, who with the help from Code 4 Northwest, was on a successful path of recovery from her addiction when her life was violently taken.  This fund aids in helping with any financial barrier, which can hinder the individual, or family from getting the mental health or substance abuse treatment they need.  Other services provided by Code 4 Northwest include: Free Crisis Incident Stress Management Peer Support and Suicide Prevention training to Agencies around the Region.
